Doug Hanzel

Started playing golf at age 3 and credits his dad and older brothers for introducing him to the game. Says his most memorable experience is winning the 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur. Entire family graduated from Kent State, including his wife, Nancy, who also taught nursing there. His children, Katie and Drew, also played on Kent State's golf team. He uses an insulin pump to control his diabetes.
He is a physician who specializes in pulmonary critical care and was named the 2007 Golf Digest No. 1 Physician Golfer in the United States.
Has played in 12 U.S. Amateurs spanning four decades. Played in the 2006 and 2009 U.S. Mid-Amateur, advancing past the first round of match play in 2006 at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz. He also played in the 2005 and 2010 USGA Men's State Team and won the 2011 Kickoff Classic in Savannah, Ga. In 2012 he won the Lupton Memorial and then nearly defended his title in 2013, but finished runner-up to Paul Simson.
Finished ninth at the 2011 Georgia Amateur and 10th at the 2011 Georgia Mid-Amateur. Won the 2004 Georgia Mid-Amateur and was the low amateur at the 2010 Georgia Open, where he finished fourth. Won the U.S. Senior Amateur in 2013. Was low amateur at the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Senior Opens. Missed the cut at the 2014 event after finishing 76-76. Won the 2014 Senior Jones Cup and 2013 Senior Dixie Amateur. Won the 2014 Georgia Senior Championship.
Is a 16-time club champion at the Landings Club in Savannah, Ga. Played golf at Kent State and was named All-Mid-America Conference his junior and senior season as well as being named Mid-America Conference Scholar Athlete of the year.
