Jim Roy

Jim Roy's mother introduced him to the game of golf and he didn't start playing seriously until the age of 15. Roy went on to play collegiate golf at the University of South Florida, winning several tournaments and being named to the Sun Belt All-Conference Team for three straight years.
Following his graduation in 1982, Roy qualified for the PGA Tour in his first attempt through Q School. In his rookie season, he played in 27 tour events, making nine cuts and missing 11 cuts by one shot. He lost his tour card after that season and was never able to earn it back, despite making nine return trips to Q School.
His best finish was a T-40th at the 1983 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am. Roy played in the 1983 U.S. Open at Oakmont and the 1989 U.S. Open at Oak Hill, missing the cut in both events. He also made one start on the Nationwide Tour, missing the cut in the 1990 Central New York Classic.
He got involved in the mortgage business, became a stockbroker and joined his in-laws' real-estate business.
Roy regained his amateur status in 1996 and went on to make a splash on the amateur scene. He has dominated local tournaments and won five New York State golf association titles (one amateur, four mid-amateurs) as well as qualifying for several U.S. Amateurs. He was inducted in the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
He is a cancer survivor after a brief bout with prostate cancer in 2005.
As an amateur, Roy earned fully-exempt status for the 2010 Champions Tour at the National Qualifying tournament in the fall after playing his way into a three-man playoff for the final exempt spot. He secured the fifth position at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona, making a 7-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Kirk Hanefeld and Bruce Vaughan, and advanced to the final stage of the PGA Tour Champions Q-School after finishing T11 in the regional qualifying tournament in Orlando.
In his rookie season on the PGA Tour Champions, Roy competed in 17 events and made the cut at all 17 events. His best finish was a T-23rd at The Cap Cana Championship.
He is currently teaching golf at the Bellevue Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y.
Roy has competed in one previous U.S. Senior Open in 2010, where he finished T-43rd.
His two sons, Kyle and Kevin, both played collegiate golf, Kyle at the University of Tampa and Kevin at Long Beach State.
