Manuel Pinero

Manuel was one of the strong Spanish contingent that made such a big impact on The European Tour during the 1970s and 1980s. Manuel won nine times on the European Tour, his first victory coming in the 1974 Madrid Open at Puerta de Hierro and his last at the 1985 Italian Open at Molinetto. . . He also won the 1977 Penfold PGA Championship at Royal St George's and emerged victorious twice in 1981 at the Madrid Open at Puerta de Hierro and the Swiss Open at Crans-sur-Sierre. Manuel has the distinction of earning four points out of five during Europe's victory in The 1985 Ryder Cup Matches at The De Vere Belfry. On that occasion he teamed up with Seve Ballesteros to win two foursomes and one four-ball match and then went on to defeat the formidable Lanny Wadkins 3 and 1 in singles. His win against Wadkins meant that he retired from the Ryder Cup with a 100 per cent singles record, his other win coming in his previous appearance in the 1981 match at Walton Heath where he defeated Jerry Pate 4 and 2. Manuel comes from Badaloz but moved to the Marbella area in 1988 to design and oversee the building of the La Quinta golf course. He made a limited number of appearances on The 2001 European Tour International Schedule, his best performance being a tie for 67th place at the Algarve Open de Portugal.
