Mardan Mamat

Mardan says his decision to train under Kel Llewellyn prior to his maiden victory in 2004 and yoga had given him the boost in his career. Struggled in 2003 before deciding to hook up with the Australian swing guru and immediately showed marked improvement by finishing tied second in the Sanya Open. When he won in India, he said yoga master Sukhdev Singh simply "told me to go out and enjoy myself" before the start of the round.
Mardan holds the honour of being Singapore's first winner on the Asian Tour and is also the first player from his country to win a co-sanctioned tournament with Europe. He is also the first player from the Lion city to qualify and play in the British Open in 1997. Mardan's maiden triumph in Asia came in 2004 when he broke through at the Indian Open after shooting a superb final round 65. But his biggest victory to date came in 2006 when he won the Singapore Masters after leading from start to finish, holding off defending champion Nick Dougherty for an emotional triumph. The Singaporean almost sealed his third Asian Tour victory at the Panasonic Open India in 2011. However he was pipped to the title by India's Anirban Lahiri in a three-way play-off that also included Manav Jaini. Won the ICTSI Philippine Open at the start of the 2012 season, winning by five shots. In 2010, the veteran enjoyed a strong season, finishing eighth on the Order of Merit. He posted top-10s at the Ballantine's Championship in Korea, Handa Singapore Classic and Iskandar Johor Open. Also picked up his career's biggest cheque of US$237,500 by finishing fifth at the PGA Tour-sanctioned CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, Malaysia. In 2009, Mardan posted four top-10s at the Singha Thailand Open, Ballantine's Championship in Korea, Brunei Open and Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open to finish 11th on the Order of Merit. Also qualified for his fourth Omega Mission Hills World Cup appearance with Lam Chih Bing after topping the qualifier in Malaysia. In 2008, he produced another consistent season where he registered three top-fives at the Asian Tour International, Philippine Open and Midea China Classic and another top-10 at the Iskandar Johor Open to finish 24th on the rankings. He endured a slow start in 2007, saying he was short in confidence but it came together in June when he finished tied second in the Wales Open before coming back to Asia to post a tied fifth finish in the Bangkok Airways Open. In 2006, he finished third in the Bangkok Airways Open, missing a 15-foot putt to join a play-off. Was also in the top-20 at the Barclays Singapore Open and qualified for the World Cup with Lam. In 2005, Mardan challenged for the title at the Indonesia Open before finishing tied 11th. Posted two other top-10s. Qualified for the World Cup with Lam after topping the qualifiers in Malaysia during the fasting month of Ramadan and qualified for his second British Open at St Andrews but subsequently missed the cut by two. Played in the Dynasty Cup for Asia and secured the point that ensured at least a tie. Showed tremendous promise during his amateur career, which was highlighted by his individual victory in the Putra Cup in 1993, and he helped Singapore land the team title. When he turned professional in 1994, Mardan enjoyed a dream start in the play-for-pay ranks. In his debut event, he scored a hole-in-one to claim a luxury car. In 1997, he shot to prominence at Royal Troon when he became the first Singaporean to qualify for the British Open.
Played on the European Tour fulltime between 2006 and 2010 he has played in 166 events on that tour. Has made 70 cuts, 7 times in the top-ten. He has earned just over a million euro.
Since turning 50 at the end of 2017 has played in one Senior event, T-21st at the 2018 Sharjah Senior Golf Masters on the Staysure European Tour.
