Matt Sughrue

Runner-up to Dave Ryan in the 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur. Has competed in multiple USGA championships, including the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur, and has tried to qualify for the U.S. Open. Made it to the Round-of-16 match play at the 2015 USGA Mid-Am. He qualified for 2007 U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club, but failed to advance to match play. Competed in multiple U.S. Mid-Amateurs. In 2001 and 2003, he advanced to match play, but lost both times in the Round of 64.
In 2002, he competed in the Middle Atlantic Amateur and placed 12th. In 2007, he competed in the MSGA Mid-Amateur and finished T8th. In 2008 and 2009, he competed in the MSGA Amateur, finishing T9th and T10th, respectively. He has also competed in four Azalea Invitationals, his best finish T56th.
While running his own insurance business, he entered graduate school at Virginia Tech in 2008 to study clinical psychotherapy, eventually completing a 3½-year internship and a thesis on chronic adult male homelessness. During that period, he didn?t have time to play golf. He started playing again in 2013.
It was a quick comeback for Sughrue, as he finsihed ninth in the 2013 Metropolitan Mid-Amateur. He won the 2014 Maryland Senior Open and finished 2nd in the 2015 Seniors Amateur Championship at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland, where he came to the par-5 18th hole tied for the lead with 2014 U.S. Senior Amateur champion Patrick Tallent and attempted to reach the final green in two.
In 2015 he finished runner-up and Low Amateur at the 2015 Maryland State Senior Open and was a 2015 Crump Cup Senior Medalist.
He is currently running his own private psychotherapy practice in Vienna, Va., where he works with individuals, couples and families on a range of relational problems and mental illness.
