Michael McCoy

Michael (Mike) McCoy began playing the game of golf around the age of 7 and credits his uncle's for introducing him to the game. Says his most memorable golf experience was winning the U.S. Mid-Amateur and playing in the 2014 Masters. Has four children: Nate, Megan, Danny and Erin, and enjoys collecting golf books. Works at Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. Insurance.
The insurance executive was 50 years old and playing in his 38th USGA event without a title when he defeated Bill Williamson, 8 and 6, in the 36-hole final of the 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at the C.C. of Birmingham. The victory made him the second-oldest U.S. Mid-Amateur champion behind Randal Lewis, who was 54 when he won in 2011. It was the championship's third-largest margin of victory since adopting the 36-hole final format in 2001. McCoy had advanced to the semifinals twice, in 2005 and 2008.
The Iowan has played in 46 USGA championships, including 16 U.S. Amateurs and 15 U.S. Mid-Amateurs and was a member of the 2015 USA Walker Cup Team. His best finish in the U.S. Amateur was in 1998 when he advanced to the third round.
Also at the U.S. Mid-Amateur, in 2005 and 2008, he advanced to the semifinals, and in 2009, he earned co-medalist honors in stroke play. McCoy was the low amateur in the U.S. Senior Open in 2012 and 2013, and tied for the lowest 72-hole score by an amateur in the latter, with a 2-over 282.
McCoy, a six-time member of the Iowa Men's State Team, has won the Iowa Amateur five times and the Iowa Mid-Amateur six times. He has triumphed at the Trans-Mississippi Championship twice (2000 and 2008), and is a four-time winner of the Crump Cup at Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey. He is also a four-time winner of the Herman Sani Invitational, and three-time champion of the Fort Dodge Amateur.
In 2012, McCoy won the Iowa Masters Championship, as well as the Trans-Miss Four-Ball Championship with Gene Elliott.
Since the inception of the Iowa Golf Association Player (IGA) of the Year award in 1960, no other competitor has won it more than three times. McCoy won his first in 1983 and his 10th 27 years later, in 2010, he now owns that award 11 times. McCoy is also a member of the Iowa Golf Association Hall of Fame.
McCoy's son, Nate, also is an accomplished golfer who reached the second stage of qualifying on the Web.com Tour and is now working for the Iowa Golf Association.
McCoy's other son, Danny, will be caddying for him this week.
McCoy has multiple victories to his name beside the big U.S. Mid-Am including five-time Iowa Amateur Champion, 2-time Trans-Miss Champion, 2-time Coleman Champion, four-time Crump Cup Champion and most recently in 2014, victories at the Lupton Invitational and the George C. Thomas Invitational, where he finished with a three-day total of 211.
In 2015, he was named to the Walker Cup Team at the age of 52. Finished 3rd at the George C. Thomas Invitational Golf Tournament and T-2nd at the George L. Thomas Invitational Golf.
Won the 61st International Four-Ball with Gene Elliott in 2017, finishing 9-under and a shot ahead of the runners-up.
In 2018 played in both the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior Open Championship (at St. Andrews) he missed the cut in both. Also played in the Senior Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl and was T-19th. He didn't make it out of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur and lost his semi-final round at the U.S. Senior Amateur to Sean Knapp 2 & 1. Was 35th in the Crump Cup and didn't make it out of stroke play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur. Ended the year with a 2nd at the Crane Cup Senior.
