Robert Gamez

His father got him startedÃ?Æ?ââ?¬Å¡Ã?â??Ã? at two-years-old by taking him to the driving range and letting him swing a cut-down club. Through high school, he never won anything but kept playing and practicing. He got a scholarship to the University of Arizona, where his game started to reach high standards. He won six collegiate events and in 1989, was named the winner of the Jack Nicklaus and Fred Haskins awards as the Outstanding Player of the Year.Ã?Æ?ââ?¬Å¡Ã?â??Ã? He also played on the 1989 Walker Cup Team. He turned professional in the fall of 1989 and easily got his Tour Card. He played in three events at the end of the season, and with the new season coming, practiced hard with the ambition to make an impact on the PGA Tour.
And that he did in 1990, winning his first tournament of the Year, the Northern Telecom Tucson Open. Since Robert spent three years at the University of Arizona and Las Vegas was a short drive away, he played in front of a gallery of family, friends, ex-teammates and college pals. He wasn't finished let, 2 months later at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, he holed a 7-iron shot for an eagle-2, on the final hole of the championship, to win by a shot over Greg Norman. Was involved in an automobile accident in June of 1998, which kept him out of action for more than a month.
Gamez played full time on the PGA Tour between 1990 and 2008. He played in 549 events making 276 cuts with 38 top-ten finishes. Along with his three wins, was runner-up 8 times and 3rd 4 times. He got to the million dollar mark twice on tour in 2003 won $1,519,804 and again in 2005 with earnings of $1,115,364. Gamez also played full-time on the Web.Com Tour in 2000 and 2010, he played a total of 48 events on the Web.Com Tour and had one top-ten T-10th at the 2000 South Carolina Open.
After Gamez won twice in 2000 it took him 15 years, six months to win the 2005 Valero Texas Open which is a PGA Tour record for longest stretch between PGA Tour wins. Gamez' endured a number of injuries and in 2014 had a quadruple bypass which afterward limited movement in his neck and back along with hurting his length off the tee. With all of the problems, when he turned 50 in the summer of 2018 he didn't have any exemptions on the PGA Tour Champions so he had to rely on sponsors exemptions.
2018 Notes: His first events he was exempt for the Senior Open Championship which was played at St. Andrews. Gamez shot 75-76 to miss the cut. His best finish was T-36th in the Pure Insurance Championship. At the end of the year went to Senor Qualify tournament but finished T-27th so again will have to play in 2019 through sponsor invites and qualifying.
