Scott Gregory

Gregory started playing golf at age 5 when his dad took him to the driving range. He enjoyed hitting the ball to targets and this trait carried over as he improved his game.
He considers himself a full-time amateur but works part-time at Portsmouth Golf Center. He says, "They have been hugely supportive of my golfing career and I have had some great conversations with customers in the shop who have heard about me." As he grew, Gregory went to the local pitch-and-putts, where he was able to develop his short game and scoring until he was good enough to progress onto a "proper" golf course. His father was keen on making sure he could chip and putt before he played a full-length course.
When he was 8 years old, he joined the local course, Portsmouth, where he first started competing. Played junior matches and got his first handicap of 28 when he was 9 years old. After a couple of years, joined Waterlooville Golf Club and this is where he played the majority of his junior golf. By age 13, his handicap was down to 8 and he was competing at the junior opens, and being a key member of the county squad. In 2009, joined Corhampton Golf Club because it was dry enough there to practice all year. Won several junior opens in 2010 and represented the England Regional Team in a few matches. Was a scratch golfer by 16 years old, but was not producing consistent results at national events.
In 2012, started working on his game with Simon Andrews, the pro at Portsmouth Golf Center, who showed Gregory ways to advance to a higher skill level and be ready to compete on not only a national scale but the world stage. In 2014, things fell into place, winning the Waterford Trophy and the Stoneham Trophy. He was also runner-up in the English Amateur at Saunton, losing 2 & 1 to Nick Marsh. In 2016, he was runner-up in the Spanish Amateur Championship, losing 9 & 8 in the final to Romain Langasque, the 2015 British Amateur champion. The following year, he defended his Stoneham Trophy and won the Courage Trophy.
This all led to the 2016 Amateur at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, where he defeated Robert MacIntyre, 2 and 1, in the final to become the first Hampshire-born player to win the Amateur. The win secured a berth in the Open Championship at Troon. In his first round, he was 4 under par after 10 holes but dropped 11 shots over the last eight holes to finish with a seven-over-par 78. He fired a second-round 73 and missed the cut. Missed the cut in the 2017 Masters and U.S. Open. He played in the 2016 British Masters on the European Tour, where he missed the cut, and also in the European Challenge Tour's Bridgestone Challenge, where he placed T-42nd.
In 2017, he finished T-59th at the Australian Masters of the Amateurs, 16th at the Australian Amateur, 20th at the Avondale Amateur and won the New South Wales Amateur, where he defeated Marco Penge in the final. Also T-26th in the Irish Amateur and T-43rd in the Lytham Trophy.
Gregory turned professional after playing in the 2017 Walker Cup. He still hasn't qualified for any tours, in his first European Challenge Tour event finished T-8th at the 2017 Challenge de Espana.
2018 Notes: Has played in four Challenge Tour events and only made the cut in one, losing in the round of 64 of match play at the Andalucia-Costa de So Match Play 9. He qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open, scoring 67 and 69 in sectional qualifying at Walton Heath Golf Club, his first major championship as a professional.
