Donnie Hammond

Started playing golf with his father at age 13. While attending Jacksonville University he won five college events, including the Sun Belt Conference title in 1979. Turned pro in 1979 and failed in his first three attempts at Q-school. He played on the Space Coast tour for three years, and won the 1982 Florida State Open. On his 4th attempt at getting his Tour card, in the fall of 1982, he not only got his card, but was the medalist by an astounding 14 strokes. Hammond played six rounds in 13-under-par on the Tournament Players Club course in Ponte Vedra, Fla. In his first three years on Tour he finished in the top 125, and won the 1986 Bob Hope Classic, beating John Cook in a playoff. He returned to the winners circle in dramatic fashion at the 1989 Texas Open. His four-day total of 258 (22-under-par) was the second lowest score in Tour history, missing Mike Souchak's record by a single shot.
