Hal Sutton

As a side business and hobby, Sutton rides and sells cutting horses. Family owns an oil company in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana and he also owns a golf course design business. In 2006, opened Christus Schumpert Sutton Children's Hospital in Shreveport, La., a five-story wing with 80 beds. Was inspired by his agent's 7-year-old daughter at the time, who passed away from spinal meningitis.
Winner of the 1980 U.S. Amateur at the Country Club of North Carolina and was the 1980 College Golf Player of the Year. Played on the U.S. Walker Cup Teams in both 1979 and 1981 and represented the U.S. in the World Amateur Team Championship in 1980.
In the 1980s, was one of the young stars on Tour, winning seven events during his first five years, including the 1983 PGA Championship. By 1992, he was struggling with his game and finished 185th on the money list. In 1993, he finished 161st and was forced to use his one-time top-50 career exemption to play the 1994 season. He played well enough that year to return to the top-30 on the money list and in 1995, he completed his comeback with a win at the British Columbia Open, closing with a final-round 61.
Was a member of the 1985, 1987, 1999 and 2001 Ryder Cup Teams. Winner of the 2000 Players Championship in memorable fashion over Tiger Woods, and member of the 2000 Presidents Cup Team. Captain of the 2004 U.S. Ryder Cup Team.

Has played on the Champions Tour since 2008 with his his best finish coming at the 2009 Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am, where he finished tied for third.
2012 Notes: Struggled with hip issues throughout his season and eventually played in only 14 events, sitting out of all events after August. Underwent hip-replacement surgery on October 11 in Naples, Fla. Best finish was a T-17th at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
2013 Notes: Season was limited to just 14 starts and none after late-August as he opted to undergo right hip-replacement surgery. Teamed with Larry Mize for a T-4th finish at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in April in Savannah. It was his best finish in a Champions Tour event since he was T-3rd at the 2009 Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am.
2014 Notes: Played in 19 events, with a pair of top-30 finishes. Was T-26th with partner Larry Mize in the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf and T-29th at the Pacific Links Hawai'i Championship. Felt ill partway though round one of The ACE Group Classic and withdrew with a heart condition. Underwent a procedure that afternoon in a nearby hospital before being released two days later.
