I planned to be a stockbroker before turning to golf as a profession. He won the 2003 Southern Arizona Open with his daughter, Christy, as his caddie. At age 14, he and a friend hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, a distance of 210 miles. The trip took the pair three weeks.
He played full-time on the PGA Tour from 1990 to 1995, 2000, and 2004 to 2010. He made 194 cuts of 369 starts, finishing in the top 10 17 times, including three second and third-place finishes. He also played in 127 events on the Korn Ferry Tour, making 68 cuts and 15 top-10s with a win at the 1998 Greater Austin Open.
He plays mainly on the PGA Tour Champions now after playing both Tours in 2009 & 2010. His first senior start was a victory in a major at the 2009 Senior PGA Championship.
In his first full year on the PGA Tour Champions in 2011, he registered 10 top-10 finishes among his 19 starts.
2012 Notes: Successfully started his 2012 PGA Tour Champions campaign, winning the Encompass Insurance Pro-Am of Tampa Bay and Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf in consecutive weeks. He earned $1,686,488, the most money he has won in a single season on any tour.
2013 Notes: He started slowly in his first three events but heated up when he won for the fourth time, defeating Bernhard Langer by one stroke at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. He won again later in the year at the Greater Hickory Kia Classic. He won multiple events for the second consecutive season and placed among the top 10 on the money list for the second straight year and the third time in the last four seasons.
2014 Notes: Won the first (Allianz Championship) and last full-field (AT&T Championship) events of the season, claiming multiple titles in a season for the third consecutive year. Eclipsed the $1.4-million mark in single-season earnings and has been over seven figures in yearly earnings for five straight PGA Tour Champions years. Finished the year 9th in the Schwab rankings.
2015 Notes: His streak of wins ended at 3 with no wins. Had nine top-10s, a best finish T-3rd at the Allianz Championship, San Antonio Championship, and a 3rd at the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. They finished 8th on the money list and 9th in the Schwab rankings.
2016 Notes: After a slow start to his year, he partnered with Woody Austin to win the Bass Pro Shops Legends in his seventh start. He got his second top-10 of the year with a T-8th at Dick's Sporting Goods Open. He was 5th at the U.S. Senior Open and T-2nd at the Shaw Charity Classic. For the seventh straight year went over the million-dollar mark as he finished 14th on the money list and 19th in the Schwab rankings.
2017 Notes: Slipped from 14th to 46th on the final Charles Schwab Cup money list and failed to earn a spot in the final Charles Schwab Cup Championship for the first time since joining the Tour full-time in 2010. He had just one top-10 in 23 starts, T-9th at the Japan Airlines Championship. Also was T-13th with partner John Daly at the Bass Pro Shops Legends and Boeing Classic.
2018 Notes: Played in 9 PGA Champions events with one top-ten. Allen and partner John Daly carded the tournament's best score, an 8-under 46, and they led after two rounds at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge. The team finished T-5th at 20-under, four shots behind winners Paul Broadhurst/Kirk Triplett. His best finish in an individual event was T-17th at the Rapiscan Systems Classic.
2019 Notes: Played in 20 PGA Tour Champions events with one top-ten. He finished 67th on the Schwab Cup points list. T-7th with partner Billy Andrade at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf. Best individual finish, T-18th at Sanford International.
2020 & 2021 Notes: Played in 28 PGA Tour Champions events with three top-25 finishes. He was 77th on the Schwab Cup points list. T-23rd at the Dominion Energy Charity and T-24th at the 2020 Hoag Classic. Was T-25th at the 2021 Shaw Charity Classic.
2022 Notes: Played in 18 PGA Tour Championship events with one top-ten. Best finish T-19th at the Pure Insurance Championship.
2023 Notes: Best finish T-16th The Galleri Classic.
