Steve Pate

He started playing golf at age 9 and shot a 107 in his first competition at age 11. His game then progressed enough to make his high school team in Santa Barbara, Calif., as a freshman. In his senior year, he won the California Interscholastic Federation title. He played college golf at UCLA, where his coach was noted teaching professional Eddie Merrins, and he was an All-American selection in 1983. Teammate of Corey Pavin, Duffy Waldorf, and Jay Delsing at UCLA.
He turned professional in 1983 and earned his PGA Tour card the following year. He finished 86th on the money list in his rookie year on Tour. He came close to winning the Georgia Pacific-Atlanta Classic but lost to Wayne Levi on the second playoff hole. In 1996, he fractured his right wrist in a car accident while driving from Phoenix to San Diego. Six months later, he fractured his right wrist again in a bicycle accident.
Member of the 1991 and 1999 USA Ryder Cup Teams.
A full-time member of the PGA Tour from 1985-2004, playing 553 events and making 362 cuts, recording 67 top-10 finishes with six wins and seven runner-up finishes. He also competed on the Web.com Tour from 2003-10, making 94 career starts and 36 cuts with four top-10 finishes, his best finish being a win in the 2010 Pacific Rubiales Bogota. In 2006, Pate teamed with Damian Pascuzzo to complete numerous golf course design projects, including a recent remodel of La Costa.
In 2011, he began his PGA Tour Champions career with a tie for eighth in the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid and a T-9th in the Principal Charity Classic in his first two starts. Finished the year ranked 50th on the money list with $310,593 in earnings.
In 2012, he completed his first full PGA Tour Champions season, finishing 32nd on the money list with five top 10s among his 22 starts. His best finish was in the SAS Championship when he shared the 36-hole lead with Fred Funk before closing with an even-par 72 to finish T-6th, his best career finish on the Champions Tour to date.
Pate is deeply involved in golf course design. In a partnership with Damian Pascuzzo, the two have designed or redone a dozen courses, including La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
2013 Notes: Played in 24 events; his best finish was his only top-10 finish, a T-7th in the inaugural Greater Gwinnett Championship. He finished 38th on the money list.
2014 Notes: He was among the top 30 money-winners for much of the season before falling out in the final month of the season. He eventually finished 33rd after being as high as eighth earlier in the year. He played some of his best golf during March and April when he notched three consecutive top-10 finishes. The best showing was when he was among three players who finished T-2nd in the Toshiba Classic. Followed his Toshiba performance with a T-6th in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. He was T-5th in the Greater Gwinnett Championship in his next start, thanks to three consecutive sub-par rounds. Underwent surgery on his left shoulder on Nov. 3.
2015 Notes: Returned from shoulder surgery by finishing T-32nd in the Allianz Championship. In 20 events, his best finish was T-23rd in the Nature Valley First Tee Pebble Beach and the Bass Pro Shops Legend when he was paired with Olin Browne. Finished the year 68th on the money list.
2016 Notes: Best finish was T-9th in the SAS Championship, followed by a T-10th in the 3M Championship. In 20 events, he was 52nd on the money list and Schwab Rankings. He was sidelined early in the year after suffering a broken right arm, which forced him to miss the first three full-field events of the season.
2017 Notes: Played in 19 events and was in the top ten twice. He finished 60th on the money list and 61st in Schwab Rank. Best finishes, T-5th in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of golf, playing with Olin Browne. Also, T-9th in the Tucson Conquistadores Classic.
2018 Notes: Played in 21 PGA Tour Champions events. Best finish T-13th in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf, playing with Olin Browne. Best individual finish T-19th at the Boeing Classic.
2019 Notes: Played in 12 PGA Tour Champions events with one top-ten finish. He was 89th on the final Schwab Rankings. I was T-7th at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf, playing with Olin Brown. Best individual start, T-43rd at the Principal Charity.
2020 & 2021 Notes: Played in 28 PGA Tour Champions events with one top-25 finish. He was 81st on the final Schwab Rankings. Best finish, T-24th at the 2021 Chubb Classic.
2022 Notes: Played in five PGA Tour events, best finish T-54th at the Regions Tradition and American Family Insurance.
2023 Notes: Best finish T-60th Invited Celebrity Classic.
