Matti Schmid

Winner of the European Amateur title in 2019 and 2020. His first success came in Austria by three shots over Euan Walker and he then retained the trophy by the same margin from fellow German Nick Bachem in Switzerland in September, holding at least a share of the lead after each of the four rounds to earn himself a second appearance at The Open. He missed the cut at the 2019 Open at Royal Portrush.
Another treat for him was in May when he helped the Louisville Cardinals qualify for the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz., with a fourth-place finish in the Noblesville, Ind., Regional. In the COVID-19-shortened season of 2019-20, Schmid had a scoring average of 69.91, the second-best mark in school history.
Schmid won at the European Amateur Championship in 2020 held at Diamond Country Club in Austria by three strokes from Euan Walker, who a week earlier had also just missed out on an Open start by losing the final of the Amateur Championship to James Sugrue. He reached the last 16 of that event himself before moving on to give the performance of his career so far.
Schmid's dad is a golf instructor and started him in golf when he was 3 years-old
Schmid became only the second German to win the European Amateur (German Stephan Gross won in 2008). Schmid will be a junior in September and he has played all around the world in amateur tournaments. Won the Bavarian champion in 2017, shooting a career-low 199 and 17-under par. Was third at the German match play, placed seventh at the European Amateur, tying a course record with a 63 at the Walton Heath Golf Club. Finished 9th in the Spanish Amateur and 4th at the Swiss Amateur in 2016 and 6th at the German Amateur in 2015. Was a member of the 2019 Palmer Cup team.
Schmid finished his second season at the University of Louisville with PING second-team All-American honors becoming just the fifth Cardinal to earn All-American accolades. He set the school's single-season record for stroke average with 70.55, which beat Robin Sciot-Siegrist's 71.44 in 2014. Did participate in the NCAA Division I championship, in stroke play was way down the list with rounds of 82-76-81 to not make the cut. As for the team matches, Louisville didn't advance. Schmid says his biggest golfing moment when he made the final putt for a 63 at the Old Town Club Collegiate to give Louisville a one-shot win over Wake Forest along with giving Schmid the individual title.
