Won the 2001 U.S. Amateur with a 1-up victory over Robert Hamilton at East Lake Golf Club. Was four four down after nine holes and five down after 14 holes. Runner-up at the 2000 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, where he lost to D.J. Trahan on the 37th hole.
Also won the 2001 Western Amateur, beating Trip Kuehne in the finals, 6 and 4. Was the first player to win both the U.S. and Western Amateur Championships in the same year since Tiger Woods did it in 1994. Also won the 1997 PGA Junior Championship. Was first team all-SEC in 2001, SEC Freshman of the year in 2000. In the 2001 NCAAs finished 11th individually as the Florida Gators won the title. Also runner-up in the 2001 Southeastern Conference Championship and Gary Koch Intercollegiate.
