Began playing golf at age 4 with the support of his parents and grandparents, who had a putting and chipping green in the backyard of their home. Did not start taking golf seriously until age 11, but continued to play baseball, soccer and basketball, and was on varsity basketball until his junior year. Recognized as one of the best amateur golfers in the nation, named first-team AJGA All-American in 2009 and 2010. In 2009, he finished T2nd in the AJGA's 2009 Rolex Tournament of Champions, and competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur, missing the cut in a playoff. In 2010, recorded a T2nd at the Porter Cup, T3rd at the Thunderbird International Junior, and 4th at the AJGA PING Invitational. Returned to the U.S. Junior Amateur and recorded a 62, a record 18-hole score for the championship, finished T5th after losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Jim Liu. Received sponsor's exemption to compete in his first PGA event at only 15 years old, the Turning Stone Championship where he missed the cut.
In 2011, he won the New York State Public High School individual men's golf title, as well as the AJGA Junior Players Championship. Received sponsor's exemption to compete in the Web.com Jacksonville Open where he missed the cut. In 2012, won the PING Invitational in a sudden-death playoff and finished T13th in the Junior PGA Championship. Selected for the 2012 Junior Ryder Cup team, which competed in Olympia Fields, Ill. and won in a decisive 14.5 to 9.5 victory over the European squad. He cites this experience as one of the most memorable in his golf career, rivaled by a hole-in-one on the infamous "Postage Stamp" eighth-hole at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland during the 2012 Duke of York Young Champions Trophy.
