John Catlin

Catlin was born and grew up in Sacramento, California, United States. He picked up the game from an early age and found a lot of success as an amateur, winning consecutive NCGA State Match Play Championships in 2010 and 2011, and Memorial Amateur Championships in 2011 and 2012. Catlin then went on to play for the University of New Mexico where he was an Academic All-American and an honorable mention NCAA All-American in 2012. In the same year, he also won the Arizona Intercollegiate and was named UNM Student-Athlete of the year.
Catlin turned professional in 2013, he began working with a coach, Noah Montgomery, which would prove to be a significant turning point in John's career. After spending the first few years of his career on the MacKenzie Tour, John flew across the Pacific Ocean and earned his Asian Tour card via Q-School in 2015. The following years proved difficult for John as he earned and lost his card multiple times and switched to the Asian Developmental Tour full time. He then re-earned full status on the Asian Tour via a third-place finish on the 2017 ADT Order of Merit. Building off this momentum in 2018, John won 3 times on the Asian Tour, which earned him Asian Tour Player Player of the Year honors. By finishing 6th on the AT Order of Merit, John secured status on the European Tour for the 2019 season.
2019 Notes: Played in 21 European Tour events making 13 cuts with no top-ten finishes. Was 155th in the Race to Dubai. He did finish 2019 with a win at the Thailand Open, his fourth victory on the Asian Tour.
2020 Notes: Played in 14 European Tour events making ten cuts with five top-ten finishes. Was 35th in the Race to Dubai. Started the year on the Asian Tour, and was 2nd at the Boonchu Ruangkit Championship. Played full time after the break from COVID-19, in his first start was T-8th at the Austrian Open. Was T-6th at the Celtic Classic four shots back of winner Sam Horsfield. John earned his maiden win on the European Tour at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters. In tour conditions over the weekend shot 72-75 to win by a shot over Martin Kaymer. He quickly followed it up with another win at the Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open just two weeks later shooting 64 in the final round to beat Aaron Rai by two shots. These two wins within the same month put John in the multiple winner's categories on the European Tour and earned him European Tour's Golfer of the Month for September 2020. He ended the year T-54th at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
2021 Notes: Played in 27 European Tour events making 17 cuts with four top-ten finishes. Was 43rd in the Race to Dubai. After a very slow start to his season shot 68-70-71-65 in the Austrian Golf Open in very cold conditions, then beat Maximilian Kieffer on the fifth hole of a playoff. Was T-5th at the Tenerife Open. Because of his playing record, the PGA of America gave Catlin and Rickie Fowler special invites to play at the PGA Championship at Kiawah. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship. When David Duval withdrew from the Open Championship, Catlin got the spot due to his OWGR ranking of 89. Royal St. George's was his first Open Championship and missed the cut. Was T-7th at the ISPS Handa World Invitational shooting four rounds in the 60s. Ended his season finishing T-9th at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
2022 Notes: Didn't finish in the top-20 in any of his first 11 starts, but with his T-4th finish at the Horizon Irish Open, five back of winner Adrian Meronk got one of three qualifying spots to play in the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews.
