Liang Wenchong

In 2007 Wen-Chong Liang was the first Chinese golfer to have reached the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking. At the time he succeeded his mentor Zhang Lian-wei as the top Chinese player.
He grew up in Zhongshan, home of China's first modern-day golf course in the 1980s. Introduced to the game at school when he was 16. Got married in 2005 and welcomed the arrival of his first child as well in the same year. When he made his entry into the professional world, Liang possessed an unorthodox baseball swing follow-through. However, he has refined his game in recent years to good effect. Plays out of Zhongshan Hot Spring Golf Club, the first modern golf club in China, which was established in 1984. It is a 36-hole complex designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Became only the second Chinese golfer to win on The European Tour when, in 2007, he followed Zhang Lian-wei into the winners' circle, by winning the same event the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters at Laguna National Golf Club, beating Iain Steel in a playoff.
Went on from there to win the Asian Tour's UBS Order of Merit in 2007, the first time it has been won by a Chinese golfer, which in turn qualified him for The 2008 Open Championship. Another first for a Chinese player as his T-64th made him the first Chinese player to make a cut at a major. Has also played in the Masters (missed cut in 2008) and PGA Championship (cut in 2007, T8th in 2010, cut in 2011). In the 2010 PGA Championship, Liang set a course record at Whistling Straits with his 8-under 64 in the third round.
In 2007, became the first Chinese player to break the $1 million earnings mark on the Asian Tour. Is a member of the European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian and China Tour. Enjoys reading non-fiction and spending time with his family. Won a 1kg gold bar for a final-round hole-in-one at the UBS Hong Kong Open in November 2006, which was his second ace in professional competition. Owns seven victories on the China Tour since 1999. Competed in only two events on the China Tour in 2006, winning both. Had six top-10 finishes on the JGTO in 2006, finishing 21st on the money list. Competed in his first PGA Tour event in 2006 at The International, finishing T37. Missed the final-round cut by a single point in the modified Stableford competition. It was the highest-ever finish by a Chinese golfer on the PGA Tour. Winner of the Nations Cup (Asian World Cup qualifier) with Zhang Lian Wei in 2001.
Liang is the highest ranked golfer from the People's Republic of China and the only Chinese golfer to have reached the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking. He has succeeded his mentor Zhang Lian-wei as the top Chinese player.
