Michael Derminio and his father David made golf history in the summer of 2001. For the first time in 43 years, there was a father-son combination in the starting field at the U.S. Amateur on Aug. 20 in Atlanta. Michael and his father, 48-year old David of Fallbrook, Calif., not only each qualified but also caddied for each other in section qualifying. It was the first time since the father-son team of Dick Chapman, the 1940 U.S. Amateur Champion, and Dixie Chapman, 16, competed in 1958 when the championship was strictly match-play (no on-site qualifying). Neither Derminio was able to make stroke play, as David shot 82-81=163 while Mike had 73-77=150.
