Niclas Fasth

Fasth was born in Gothenburg, Sweden and he turned professional in 1993 when he won three events on the second-tier European Challenge Tour. Since 1994, he has been a member of the European Tour for every season except for 1999. He qualified for the U.S.-based PGA Tour at the 1997 Qualifying School and played the PGA and European Tours concurrently in 1998. He struggled on both tours and in 1999 found himself back on the Challenge Tour. Since then, he has concentrated on playing in Europe, primarily on the European Tour since 2000. The decision to re-focus totally on Europe paid off with a victory in the Madeira Island Open in 2000.
A solid 2003 was followed by a modest 2004, in which he played a sizeable schedule in America but he started 2005 in style with victory in the Holden New Zealand Open. Six months later he followed that with a second playoff victory when he won the Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe after defeating Angel Cabrera on the third playoff hole. A superb 2005 saw him win twice, both in playoffs. After winning twice in both 2005 and 2006, he took his victory tally up to six European Tour titles when he won the 2007 BMW International Open in Munich. Fasth finished 4th at the 2007 U.S. Open and finished a career-best 5th on the Order of Merit. His previous best year on the Race to Dubai was in 2001 when he finished 10th, and helped largely by finishing runner-up to David Duval in The Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes. He went on to make his Ryder Cup debut in 2002 where he was denied the chance of holing the winning putt by Paul Azinger's audacious chip-in from the bunker at the 18 in their singles match. Earlier in his career, he came close to becoming the first player to win The European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage twice, having claimed top honors in 1996 and then finishing second in 1999.
A decade of finishing inside the top-100 in The Race to Dubai came to an end for Fasth in 2010, when he had to settle for the 104th spot in The Race. Since then, has had problems and has not been inside the top-125 since.
Fasth wound down his European Tour in 2018, playing in his last event at the Nordea Masters close to his home. After 25 years on the European Tour Fasth was looking to new challenges. After many years living in England, he and his family moved back to Sweden, and the decision to stop competing emerged. He enjoyed being with his family and things changed as his children got a taste of Swedish schools and culture. He represents Hills Golf and Sports Club, a golf club just south of Gothenburg.
In his European Tour career, he played in 545 events making 297 cuts. He was in the top ten, 57 times and earned euro10,641,157. He played in 25 majors his best finish was 2nd at the 2001 British Open. In four Masters his best finish was T-39th in 2008, in 8 PGA Championship starts his best finish was T-10th at Oak Hill in 2003. And in six U.S. Opens his best finish was 4th at Oakmont in 2007. He played in the 2002 Ryder Cup and had a 0-1-2 record. The last time he played in America was at the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, he missed the cut.
2022 Notes: Played in his first senior event finishing T-30th at the Riegler & Partner Legends.
