Troy Kelly

For Kelly playing this week is a dream, but something he thought couldn't happen. He looks at Chambers Bay almost every day, gazing through a window out the back of his house. He lives just eight minutes from the course but the odds on him making it through qualifying were slim. He hasn't played a PGA Tour event since February (still can play in eight events this year under medical exemptions) and has endured lots of pain from injuries. He?s had surgeries on his left hip (had hip replacement surgery) and right knee and said he now has a torn labrum in his right hip. Though he said his left knee had been more bothersome than the hip, he's still looking at having surgery on his right hip after the Open. The good news is that he's lost about 25 pounds in the last three months, mostly by cutting out soda.
Started playing golf when "my dad put a club in my hand as soon as I could walk." His golf career began at age 6 when he was the youngest player to start competing in Washington State Junior Golf Association Tournaments. Played WJGA events a record 12 years. He was the WJGA state champion at age 11 and 13. Compiled more than 40 junior golf tournament titles, with his first win coming at age 7.
As a freshman playing for the University of Washington, he was T-2nd at the 1999 NCAA Championship at Hazeltine National GC. He finished at 1-under, tied with Georgia's Ryuji Imada, three strokes behind Northwestern's Luke Donald. Went on to win first-team All-Pac-10 and third-team All-American honors that season. Second-team All-Pac-10 in 2000...Won the 2000 Topy Cup in Japan, featuring collegiate men's and women's players from the United States and Japan.
After graduation, played on the Gateway Tour in Arizona, took a year off to work. Spent time on the Gateway Tour in 2003, 2005 and 2006 and the Golden State Tour in 2007 and 2008. Also played on the Web.com Tour in 2007 and spent part of the year on the Canadian Tour in 2008. Of the six Web.com Tour starts he made in 2007, posted a season-best T25 at the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open. Has been a multiple winner on Gateway and Golden State Tours. Winner of the 2006 California Open on the AG Spanos Tour. Qualified for the 2005 U.S. Open, where he missed the cut at Pinehurst No. 2. Shot 83-67. Older brother Ryan, an accomplished amateur and a former pro, caddied for him at the U.S. Open. Played in 2012 British Open, missed the cut after 72-76.
At the end of 2008, successfully made it through all three stages of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament to earn a spot on Tour in 2009.
Played both PGA Tour and Web.Com Tour in 2009.
Tough year on the PGA Tour in 15 starts made only three cuts and finished 238 on the money list. Finished T-116th at Q-School which meant back to the Web.Com Tour in '10. He finished 11th on the 2011 Web.com Tour Money List to earn a PGA Tour card for 2012. He was in position to win at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, but fell in a playoff to Ted Potter Jr.
