Neil earned the biggest victory of his young life when he defeated South Africa?s Zander Lombard, 2 and 1, at Royal Portrush to capture the title at the 119th Amateur Championship. He?s the first Scot to win the biggest title in amateur golf since Forfar?s Stuart Wilson in 2004, and the youngest-ever Scot to win the championship.
The victory capped a superb season for the 18-year-old from Blairgowrie Golf Club. He had already posted seven top-10 finishes before Portrush, with three seconds and two third-place finishes, including a playoff loss in the St. Andrews Links Trophy. Neil has played for Scotland in under-14 and under-18 teams. In 2013, he won the Scottish Boys Championship and represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Jacques Legalise Trophy. He won the Reid Trophy in 2010, the England Under-14 Championship.
Neil spoke at Portrush about ?Living the Dream? ? playing in the 2014 Open Championship at Hoylake. He had a disappointing week at the Open, missing the cut with an 11-over-par score, but being under the microscope proved to be a valuable lesson. The week made him realize how mentally and physically tough professional golf is and that he had to learn to deal with those high-pressure situations better. He was able to do just that two months later at the Junior Ryder Cup, winning a point-and-a-half in three matches.
Neil's British Amateur victory earned him a spot in the 2014 British Open (missed cut), 2015 Masters (missed cut) and 2015 U.S. Open. This year's U.S. Open will be Neil's second USGA championship after playing in the 2014 U.S. Amateur.
