Alex Smalley

First golf memory was hitting a rubber golf ball in his backyard in the snow in North Carolina. Father, Terry, and mother, Maria have both caddied for him extensively in his career. His mother Maria earned a PhD at Duke in 1995. Was a four-year letterman at Duke. Was a Ping and Golfweek second-team All-American selection in 2019. Was also the 2019 Duke Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Won the individual medal in the 2016 U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club with a total of 133 (-7), at that time the second-lowest stroke-play total in U.S. Amateur history. Advanced to the Round of 32 in match play before being eliminated from the championship by eventual quarterfinalist Dylan Meyer. Also played in the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur, advancing to the round of 64. Member of both the 2019 U.S. Arnold Palmer Cup team and the Walker Cup team, registering a 3-1-0 record in each event. His Walker Cup participation made him only the second Blue Devil in history to play in the tournament (Dick Siderowf: 1969, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1979). Made his PGA Tour debut, qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills, shooting 7-under par in the 36-hole qualifier. Went on to miss the cut. He turned pro after graduating from Duke in 2019.
2020 Notes: Monday-qualified into the Waste Management Phoenix Open but missed the cut. In Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada qualifying, finished T-3rd. Played in seven LOCALiQ Series events, was 3rd at the Alpharetta Classic and T-4th a the Invitational at Auburn.
2021 Notes: Made four PGA Tour starts, making all four cuts and posting three top-30s, highlighted by a T-14th at the 2020 Corales Puntacana Championship, for enough non-member FedExCup points to earn a spot at the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Finals. Made the cut at all three Finals events and closed with results of T-4th at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship and T-15th at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, enough to finish 12th on The Finals 25 and earn his first PGA Tour card.
2022 Notes: Played in 30 PGA Tour events making 17 cuts with three top-ten finishes. Was 71st in the FedExCup rankings. Got his first runner-up of his PGA Tour career with a T-2nd at the Corales Puntacana Championship. Shot 65 in the final round to finish a shot back of winner Chad Ramey. Was T-6th at the Mexico Open, three shots back of winner Jon Rahm. Was T-10th at the Genesis Scottish Open. In the FedExCup playoffs, missed the cut at the FedEx St. Jude and T-44th at the BMW Championship.
2023 Notes: In back-to-back weeks was T-4th at the Cadence Bank Houston Open and T-5th at the RSM Classic.
