Billy Hurley III

Hurley grew up in Leesburg, Va., the oldest of four children of Billy and Cheryl Hurley. He attended Loudoun County High School. During his senior year in 2000, he was one of 17 golfers named honorable mention All-Met (Washington D.C. metro area). Was an officer in the Navy after graduation from the United States Naval Academy (2004-09). Won seven tournaments during his career at the Naval Academy, including six during his senior year. Named the Byron Nelson Award winner in 2004 and won the Virginia State Amateur in both 2004 and 2005.
Was a member of the victorious 2005 USA Walker Cup Team.
Served as a lieutenant aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer for part of 2010 in the Persian Gulf, helping protect Iraqi oil platforms. Served on the USS Chung-Hoon, a 10,000-ton guided-missile destroyer. Also worked on a cruiser in Jacksonville, Fla., and a destroyer in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii during his five-year obligation. He taught economics for two years at the Naval Academy.
After turning pro in 2006, Hurley played under sponsor exemptions at six events but only made the cut in two of them. Went to PGA Tour Q-School at the end of 2010 and finished T-127th which secured limited access to the Web.com Tour.
2011 Web.com Summary: Tournaments Entered - 20; In Money - 13; Top-10 Finishes - 4; Scoring Average 69.73 (Rank 14th); Money - $180,191 (Rank 25th); Best Finish - 2nd, Chiquita Classic. His 25th-place finish on the Web.com Tour money list earned him the last spot among the 25 who advanced to the PGA Tour for the 2012 season.
2012 Notes: Made eight cuts in 27 starts. Bright part of the year was finishing T-4th at the AT&T National outside of his hometown and two weeks later finished T-8th at the John Deere Classic. After that, missed six cuts in eight starts to finish 150th in the FedExCup standings and 151st on the money list. Went back to Q-School but finished T-73rd.
2013 Web.com Summary: Tournaments Entered - 24; In Money - 15; Top-10 Finishes - 3; Scoring Average 70.28 (Rank 33rd); Money - $146,979 (Rank 35th); Best Finish - T-2nd, United Leasing Championship, losing in a playoff to Ben Martin. With a final-round 68, he moved into a T-8 at the Web.com Tour Championship, which allowed him to earn his PGA Tour card for 2014. Wound up No. 26 on the Finals' priority list.
2014 Notes: 17 of 26 made cuts and four top-10s. Advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time in his career, where his season ended with a T-57th at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Was 97th in the FedExCup standings and 91st on the money list. Finished four times in the top-10. In the year's first event, the Frys.com Open, Hurley III finished T-9th and then 5th at the Honda Classic, just missing the playoff by a shot. T-8th at the Quicken Loans National and T-4th at the Greenbrier Classic to earn his exemption.
2015 Notes: Played in 28 events and made 14 cuts, just one top-10, a T-8th at the CIMB Classic. Finished 136th in the FedExCup rankings and 148th on the money list. Had to go into the Web.com Tour finals, where he missed the cut at the Small Business Connection Championship, T-9th at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship and T-43rd at the Web.com Tour Championship. Finished the four Finals' events ranked 34th on the money list, giving him limited membership on the PGA Tour in 2016.
2016 Notes: After making 11 PGA Tour starts and four starts on the Web.com Tour, the United States Naval Academy graduate earned his breakthrough PGA Tour victory at the Quicken Loans National at Congressional Country Club near his hometown of Annapolis, Md. His three-shot win over Vijay Singh came in his 104th PGA Tour start at the age of 34 years, 17 days. With the win, he earned a spot at the 145th British Open at Royal Troon as part of The Open Qualifying Series, but he turned it down because his sister Megan was getting married the Saturday of the Open.
Earned his second top-10 with a T-8th at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Finished 55th in the FedExCup standings and 55th on the money list.
2017 Notes: Played in 25 PGA Tour events making 15 cuts with one top-ten. Best finish T-8th at the Wells Fargo Championship. Unable to advance to the FedExCup Playoffs, ended his season after the Wyndham Championship ranked 135th in the FedExCup standings.
2018 Notes: Played in 27 PGA Tour events making 8 cuts. Best finish T-25th at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Was 201st in the FedExCup standings so in the 2019 season competing out of the Past Champion category.
2019 Notes: Best finish T-9th at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with partner Peter Malnati. Best individual finish, T-30th at the Valspar Championship.
