His start in golf was very unusual. No one in his family played and one day he found some golf balls and took them to the beach and hit them with a baseball bat. A neighbor saw him and took him to their country club, where he got the bug. After graduating from high school, he went to college at the University of Tampa and his game started to come together. After five years of playing on the mini-tour, he won 5 events and qualified to play on tour in 1986. He earned $117,355 that first year and won Rookie-of-the-Year honors. He couldn't maintain that level, and fell back on the money list the next two seasons and didn't make a notable impression until his 5th place finish in the 1989 U.S. Open. Despite the good finish in the Open, he was forced back into Q-school and barely made the tour in 1990. Claar enjoyed a successful season, easily earning exempt status for '91.
