Cameron Young

He got started playing golf at an early age. His father, David Young, was the head professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Westchester County, New York, for 21 years before retiring at the end of 2022. Cameron's mom briefly played professional golf, and his aunt is a teaching professional.
Young was a member of the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup and Junior World Cup teams. At the Junior Ryder Cup, he helped Team USA win by a 16-8 margin and finished 4th at the Junior World Cup in Japan. He also finished 6th at the Junior PGA Championship in 2014. He defeated some of the best juniors in the country to win the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Cameron also won the Met Junior and was T-5th at the Met Open. He was a 2014 U.S. Amateur quarterfinalist and reached the match play of the U.S. Amateur in 2015. He made it to the second round, losing to Spain's Jon Rahm. Young joined the Wake Forest golf team in the fall of 2015.
2016 Notes: He played in 13 events for Wake Forest and had a scoring average of 72.87. Was the individual champion at the U.S. Collegiate Championship and the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, becoming the first Demon Deacon to win twice during the fall season since Bill Haas in 2003-04, the first Wake Forest player to win consecutive tournaments since Haas in 2002-03, the first Deacon freshman to win successive tournaments since Curtis Strange in 1973-74 and the first Deacon to have two victories as a freshman since Gary Hallberg in 1976-77. Young reached the round of 32 of the 2016 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball with Paul McBride and reached the round of 16 of the 2016 U.S. Amateur.
2017 Notes: Named All-ACC and ACC All-Academic Team, also selected as a PING All-East Region. He played in nine events and had a scoring average of 72.81. His best finish was T-10th at the Rod Myers Invitational, and he shot a season-best 213 (3-under) at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. He had a season-best 67 during the first round of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur and won the 2017 New York Open, becoming the first amateur to win the title. Young defeated Chris DeForest in a two-hole playoff but had to forego a $17,500 payday to maintain his amateur status.
2018 Notes: Honorable Mention All-American and All-ACC. He was selected as PING All-East Region. Cameron played in nine events with a stroke average of 70.11 (3rd best in program history). He had four top-5 finishes (Rod Myers Invitational, Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, 3M Augusta Invitational, Stitch Intercollegiate). His best finish was T-2nd at Stitch Intercollegiate, and he shot a season-best 204 (-12-under) at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. He had 11 rounds in the 60s and had a season-best 65 in the final round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational.
2019 Notes: He registered three victories in his senior season for the Demon Deacons and had a stroke average of 70.56. Graduated from Wake Forest University in May.
Young debuted in the U.S. Open after earning medalist honors in the Purchase, N.Y., sectional qualifier. He shot 75-76 at Pebble Beach to miss the cut. He played in three PGA Tour Latinoamerica events, made two cuts, and posted one top-10 to finish his year 87th on the Order of Merit.
2020/21 Notes: After beginning the season with no status, finished the 2020-21 combined season 17th in the Korn Ferry Tour points standings after recording two wins, a runner-up finish, and six top-10s across 28 starts. Was 10th in the Korn Ferry Tour money list with $422,174 in earnings and was 33rd in the priority ranking.
Young started playing on the Korn Ferry with a special temporary membership thanks to qualifying for a July 2020 tournament on a Monday and finishing in the top 14 in four straight tournaments. After winning the qualifying tournament, he was scheduled to play on the PGA Tour Canada Tour in 2020, but COVID-19 led to that tour's shutdown. He then started on a tear on the Korn Ferry Tour. It began with him shooting a 64 at Bent Tree Golf Club in a Monday qualifying event to get into the Pinnacle Bank Championship. With rounds of 67-68-69, he was T-2nd, three shots out of the lead going into the final round. He shot 73 in the final round to finish T-11th. The following week he was T-14th at the WinCo Foods Portland Open. The next two weeks earned him a temporary card as he was T-6th at the Albertsons Boise Open and then T-2nd at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship, a shot back of winner Curtis Luck. He then had an indifferent run of golf from September to May in which in 12 starts, he made the cut in just four events. The best finish was T-13th at the Huntsville Championship. Then he had back-to-back weeks in which he won the AdventHealth Championship and the Evans Scholars Invitational. Young then qualified to play in the 2021 U.S. Open in Torrey Pines but missed the cut. He returned to the Korn Ferry Tour after the U.S. Open and had nine events to win again, which would have gotten him an automatic advancement to the PGA Tour for winning three times. He finished T-5th at the Live and Work in Maine, then in the Korn Ferry finals was T-32nd at the Albertsons Boise Open, T-10th at the Nationwide Children's, and missed the cut at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship to finish his two-year ride on the Korn Ferry Tour.
2022 Notes: Played in 25 PGA Tour events, making 18 cuts with seven top-ten finishes. Was 19th on the FedExCup points list. After missing the cut in his season debut at the Fortinet Championship, Young made his first PGA Tour cut in his fifth career start (the second of the season) with rounds of 67-65-67-68 and finished T-2nd just a shot back of winner Sam Burns at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He would be runner-up again in February at the Genesis Invitational, two shots back of winner Joaquin Niemann. With that finish, he jumped from 113th to 53rd in the Official World Golf Ranking. His next start was T-16th at the Honda Classic, jumping to 51st in the ranking. With his T-13th at the Arnold Palmer, Young jumped to 44th, and despite missing the cut at the Players and finishing T-35th at the WGC-Dell Match Play, was 47th in the ranking and thus got a Masters invitation for being in the top-50 of the Official World Golf Ranking the week before the Masters. He missed the cut at the Masters but the next week shot a final-round 66 at the RBC Heritage to finish T-3rd, a shot back of the Jordan Spieth/Patrick Cantlay playoff. Shot a final-round 69 to finish T-2nd at the Wells Fargo, two shots back of winner Max Homa. He finished T-3rd at the PGA Championship after making a cut in a major for the first time in his fourth attempt. He finished one shot out of the playoff between Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris. Held a share of the first-round lead at the Memorial before finishing T-60th. Had a two-shot lead after a first-round 64 at the British Open. He finished 2nd, a shot back of winner Cameron Smith. It was Young's fourth runner-up of the season and first in a major championship. Made an eagle at the 72nd hole to move from third to second on the leaderboard. He was T-2nd at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with rounds of 71-63-65-68 to finish five shots back of winner Tony Finau. In the FedEx Cup playoffs was T-31st at the FedEx St. Jude, T-23rd at the BMW Championship, and 19th at the Tour Championship. He played in his first Presidents Cup and had a 1-2-1 record. He lost his singles match to Sungjae 1 up.
2023 Notes: Played in 24 PGA Tour events, making 21 cuts with five top-ten finishes. Was 42nd on the FedExCup points list. He was 3rd at the unofficial Hero World Challenge, four shots back of winner Viktor Hovland. He was T-10th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. In the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship, Young was 3-0-0 in group play, beating Davis Thompson, Corey Conners, and Sepp Straka. He beat Billy Horschel 5 & 4 in the round of 16, beat Kurt Kitayama 1 up, and then beat Rory McIlroy in 19 holes to get into the final. Young lost in the final to Sam Burns 6 & 5. It was Young's sixth runner-up finish over the last two years. Finished T-7th at the Masters. Had a two-shot lead going into the third round of the John Deere Classic, shot 71-68 over the weekend to finish T-6th, five shots back of winner Sepp Straka. Was T-8th at the British Open. In the playoffs was T-21st at the FedEx St. Jude and T-15th at the BMW Championship.
2024 Notes: He placed 8th at the WM Phoneix Open and 4th at the Cognizant Classic, three shots back of the winner Austin Eckroat. He was 2nd at the Valspar Championship, two shots back of winner Peter Malnati. It was his seventh runner-up finish.
