Dana Bates

Bates first picked up the game after watching Nancy Lopez play at her home course in Tacoma, Wash. and realized that people pay to watch her golf. She attended the University of Hawaii under coach Jackie Pung, 1957 U.S. Women's Open Champion, before transferring to the University of Arizona under coach Kim Haddow. After college, Bates played in numerous LPGA Tour events before becoming an LPGA Teaching Professional.
Bate marks her 'claim to fame' as tying the all-time 9-hole scoring record, 28, during the T&PC Western Section Championship in Las Gatos in 2004. She went on to win the event and qualify for the LPGA Championship, where she failed to make the cut. She appeared on Big Break Ka'anapali in 2008.
Bates has taught at La Quinta Country Club in Calif., Exmoor Golf Club in Ill., and Quaker Ridge Golf Club in N.Y.
Currently, she plays weekly while wintering in Sand Valley, Nev. and works as a wrangler on Sandy Valley Ranch. In the summers she returns to New York and plays frequently with her husband at Winged Foot Golf Club.

Bates shot 85-77=162 (+16) to miss the cut in the inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open.
