David Gilford

Had a fine amateur career winning the 1984 English Amateur which helped him earn a berth on the 1985 British & Ireland Walker Cup Team. He finished his amateur career winning the 1986 British Youths' Championship and when he turned professional in 1987 he got his tour card and won the 1987 Silvermere Satellite Tournament. Despite this victory, he was forced to return to qualifying school because he finished 135th on the Order of Merit. He regained his card and finished 67th on the Order of Merit in 1988. He improved in 1989 to 52nd on the Order of Merit but slipped to 95th in 1990. At the beginning of 1991, Gilford was a long shot at winning a berth on the Ryder Cup Team. He started the year slowly, after the Spanish Open he was 73rd in the Order of Merit. But with a fourth-place finish in the Italian Open and a T-2nd, two weeks later in the British Masters, he climbed to 21st on the list. A 3rd place finish in the Scottish Open helped his cause, but a win in the English Open put him 10th on the Order of Merit. The victory at the Belfry was in Gilford's backyard, as he was able to return home each evening to look after the 30 cows he kept on his 24-acre farm near Crewe, England. But the Ryder Cup spot was still up in the air, as he finished four under par in the German Open. It came down to Philip Walton having to birdie one of the last two holes to knock him out. But Walton wasn't able to do it and Gilford and seven others T-30th, which gave him enough money to beat Emmon Darcy for the last berth by about $90.00. So Gilford played in the 1991 and '95 Ryder Cup. Was Europe's joint-top points scorer at Oak Hill with three points out of four.
Played on the European Tour between 1986 and 2005, he played in 428 events. Made the cut in 294 events and was in the top-ten 62 times. Had six wins, seven runner-up, and six third-place finishes. He earned euro3,756,909 on the European Tour.
Gilford played in one Staysure European Senior event in 2015, finishing T-26th in the French Riviera Masters.
2016 Staysure Seniors Tour Summary: Tournaments entered - 10; top-10 finishes - 1; Euro50,942 (ranked 32nd); Best finish, 3rd at the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open.
2017 Staysure Seniors Tour Summary: Tournaments entered - 10; top-10 finishes - 1; Euro49,377 (ranked 30th); Best finish, T-3rd at the Sharjah Senior Golf Masters. Was also T-7th at the Travis Perkins Masters.
