Bother Dave played basketball at Northwestern University and Drake University. Father played baseball for Illinois State and is his biggest golf influence because he introduced him to the game. Career ambition is to play on the PGA Tour, majoring in interdisciplinary studies, focused in human resources and society.
Won the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links, becoming the first Spartan to take home the title, it was his fourth time playing in the Amateur Public Links. Entered the match play portion as the No. 20 seed, after back-to-back 71s in the qualifying rounds ... Upset two All-Americans en route to his 5&3 win over John Chin, the 2008 Big West Player of the Year, in the 36-hole final ... Shot a 145 (74-71) in stroke play at the U.S. Amateur, his first ever, to tie for 63rd, but lost in a playoff for the final two positions in match play. Competed in the Western Amateur, he also won the 2008 Western Intercollegiate and the 2007 Fossum Invitational.
Brother Andy caddied during the championship match of the 2008 Amateur Public Links. Only problem, he didn't pick up the bag until the 6th hole. Newman had carried his own bag during stroke play and through the quarterfinals of match play. Michigan State teammate Randall Hutchison (who lost in the quarterfinals) caddied for Newman in the semifinal. Also played basketball and baseball in high school and he enjoys basketball, hunting and fishing.
