McCoy started playing golf when he was 18 months old. Watching golf on TV influenced his desire to play. This will be his first U.S. Open after making his second attempt to qualify. McCoy attended high school at Habersham Central, and won the state title in 2012 for Class 4-A. He was named Georgia Player of the Year and earned first-team Rolex Junior All-America honors. He finished 2nd at the 2011 Rolex Tournament of Champions and took 5th in 2012. He shared medalist honors during the stroke-play portion of the 2014 U.S. Amateur. McCoy has also played in three U.S. Junior Amateurs (best finish: Round of 32).
McCoy finished his junior season at the University of Georgia in 2014-15. He was named second-team All-American by Golfweek and honorable mention All-American by the GCAA. McCoy took his first lesson at age 3. For the next dozen years, he worked with Tampa-area PGA professional Paul Sylvester, who taught McCoy the basics of the game. He first met Georgia coach Chris Haack at a UGA summer golf camp when McCoy was 7 years old. Haack is one of McCoy's mentors along with former Champions Tour player James Mason.
He enjoys fishing and watching Netflix. McCoy is the son of Terry and Cheryl McCoy.
