Mason Andersen

The incoming Arizona State University freshman qualified for his first U.S. Open in the Newport Beach, Calif., sectional by shooting 9-under 134, which included a 64 at Big Canyon Country Club. He added a 70 at Newport Beach C.C. He just recently graduated from Hamilton High in Chandler, Ariz., and won the 2016 Arizona Stroke Play Championship by three shots. He first swung a golf club at the age of 12, and in six short years he has tallied a number of accomplishments. The 18-year-old helped Hamilton High take home the 2014 state title. In 2016, not only did he win the Arizona Stroke Play Championship, but he advanced to the U.S. Open sectional qualifier, was medalist in the Arizona Amateur, and won the Junior Golf Association of Arizona Thunderbird Invitational. His most memorable feat is qualifying for this year?s U.S. Open with his father, the man that introduced him to the game, on his bag. Andersen decided to stick close to home when choosing to play for Arizona State in Tempe, just a short drive from his home. Won the Arizona Golf Associaton's Mayfair Award in 2016. The award is given to the AGA member with the lowest weighted scoring average at the end of each year. He earned that honor by posting a weighted average of 68.99. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of former ASU standout golfer Billy Mayfair, who won the 1986 U.S. Amateur Public Links and U.S. Amateur before embarking on a successful professional career. Outside of golf he enjoys playing ping pong and tennis. His younger sister, Abby, will be following in his footsteps, having verbally committed to play softball at ASU in 2018.
