Peter Martin

Grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey, went to South Carolina and majored in accounting and economics, but did not play golf... out of college worked as an auditor for the federal government, after that worked for twenty years as finance director for large car dealership in West Palm Beach... only retired in September of 2002 to play golf full-time, though did turn professional in 1997, with the hope of playing on the Champions Tour (now Champions Tour) upon turning 50. Has long golf history, started playing at age 10 and won first junior tournament in 1967. Qualified for U.S. Amateur Public Links first in 1972, played three other times, with best finish in 1980 when he reached the round of 16... played in British Amateur in 1978. Has attempted to qualify for U.S. Open several times, never advanced past local... currently playing senior mini-tour events in Florida, tenth on the money list... won 36-hole event with scores of 69-67 at Cobblestone in August of 2002... went to Q-school for Champions Tour upon turning 50, failed to make it. Remembers this as a ??real education?... 2003 marks first time in which he attempted to qualify for Senior Open, won one of two spots at Deer Creek Golf Club in Deerfield Beach, Florida in playoff, shot 68... remembers sensation of ??shaking,? disbelief after learning he had qualified... qualifying for Senior Open the realization of a life-long dream to make it to the ??big show.?
