Scott McGihon

McGihon picked up the game of golf at the age of 16. His father, Glenn McGihon, was a PGA golf professional and Director of Golf at the Legends Club in Indian Wells, so picking up the game was not a difficult choice for McGihon. He became the captain of his high school team at Indio High and went on to become the No. 1 golfer for two seasons at College of the Desert before transferring and becoming the No. 1 golfer at the University of California, Irvine.
After college McGihon kept his amateur status and continued to the play mostly Southern California Golf Association events. He captured the SCGA Amateur Champion title twice, the Southern California Mid-Amateur Champion title, the 2004 Trans-Mississippi Mid-Amateur Champion title, became a four-time member of the SCGA Seaver Cup team and made it to the U.S. Open Sectional qualifier three times.
In 2006, McGihon's fame in the golf world came not from his talent but from his idea of creating a new type of golf tournament. He created the Champions Invitational at Terra Lago in Indio. The tournament is college-formatted, set up as 54-holes played over two days, and is an ideal event for college coaches to come and watch the best prep players in the game. In the event's first year (2006), Rickie Fowler took home the championship and many other notable golfers have been medalists since.
McGihon is currently a history teacher, is married and has three children.
