Gana captured the 2017 Latin America Amateur Championship title in dramatic fashion, winning the first sudden-death playoff in the event?s three-year history.
His victory was momentarily in doubt when his par putt at the 72nd hole lipped out, dropping him back into a tie with countryman Joaquin Niemann and Mexico?s Alvaro Ortiz.
The 19-year-old, though, steadied himself and, on the second playoff hole, hit his second shot to within two feet that up the winning birdie. Inspired by the performance of Matias Dominguez at the inaugural Latin America Amateur Championship, Gana is now the second Chilean champion in the young tournament.
?This is something incredible,? he told ChileAS.com. ?Never in my life I thought I could play the Masters. A few days ago I was nobody and now I will play the tournament that I always dreamed, I can not believe what I am living.?
Gana arrived in Panama with little fanfare as the 285th-ranked amateur in the world and one of eight Chilean players in the field. He was in the shadow of Niemann, his best friend and the favorite to win the Latin America Amateur Championship as the world?s 5th-ranked amateur. Gana and Niemann first met at a tournament at the age of 12 and always motivated each other.
Gana graduated from the Athletic Study Center, a center dedicated to young athletes, and was trained by Eduardo Miquel. Gana has been involved in golf competitively for almost five years. He began playing at age 8 when his stepfather, Alejandro Roessler, an airline pilot with whom he has lived with since he was 3 years old, took him to the Club de La Dehesa. He also has two 13-year-old twin brothers, Luka and Simon Roessler, who also play golf.
In addition to qualifying for the Masters, Gana earned exemptions into the U.S. and British Amateur Championships. His LAAC win also secured spots in the Open Qualifying Series for the British Open and the final stage of qualifying for the U.S. Open at Erin Hills.
Ghana will become the third Chilean to play in the Masters. Enrique Orellana was the first in 1964 (missed cut) and then Matias Dominguez, who played in 2015 after winning the LAAC.
Ghana, still an amateur, will travel to Florida in August to study business at Lynn University. For now, he says, he is not planning to become a professional.
