Smyth grew up in the small beach town of Shell Harbor, about an hour and a half south of Sydney. He didn't pick up a golf club until he was 12, but he quickly rose through the amateur ranks.
Smyth enjoyed a strong amateur career representing Australia on several occasions and quickly rose through the amateur ranks. He won the 2015 Riversdale Cup and was runner-up at the 2016 Australian Amateur, and rose to 11th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking in 2017.
Travis soon found himself deep into contention at the 2017 U.S. Amateur at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. His run was impressive, getting to match play, then knocking off Will Gordon 3 & 1 in the round of 64 and eventually beating PGA Tour star Will Zalatoris 2 & 1 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Aussie's run ended when he bogeyed the last hole to lose a heartbreaker 1 down to eventual champion Doc Redman, but he made his presence in the amateur golf world known. Two weeks later, playing in just his 11th professional event at the Northern Territory PGA Championship, the then 22-year-old shot 66-67 over the weekend to win the event by six shots over Deyen Lawson.
Smyth turned professional in late 2017 and joined the Asian Tour after tying for 3rd at the 2018 Asian Tour Qualifying School. He finished in the top 50 on the Order of Merit in 2018 and 2019. On the PGA Tour of Australasia, Smyth lost a playoff at the 2019 New South Wales Open and tied for 3rd at the 2020 ISPS Handa Vic Open, a European Tour co-sanctioned event.
Because of the COVID shutdown, he was only able to play in five events and Finished T-3rd at the ISPS Handa Vic Open, a joint DP World/Asian Tour event. He was T-11th at the Singapore Open and T-13th at the Hong Kong Open.
2021 Notes: Was only able to play in eight events, Finished T-4th at the Moonah Links and T-8th at the TPS Sydney on the Australian Tour. On the Asian tour was T-10th at the Blue Canyon Phuket Championship.
2022 Notes: He played mostly on the Asian Tour and got his first top-10 with a T-10th at the DGC Open. He then finished T-8th at the Trust Golf Asian Mixed Stableford Challenge and then was 2nd at the International Series England, just one shot back of the winner Scott Vincent. All this led up to his first breakthrough with a two-shot victory at the Yeangder TPC. He went on to finish 16th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
2023 Notes: Started the year T-6th at the PIF Saudi International and then 7th at the International Series Oman. At the World City Championship presented by Hong Kong Golf Club, Smyth shot 66 in brutal weather in the final round to finish 3rd, three shots back of winner Taichi Kho. The finish had another added perk, and that was he claimed one of four spots to play in his first major at the 151st Open Championship.
