Will Gordon grew up in a small North Carolina town of Davidson, 30 miles north of Charlotte. Played junior golf, making it to the round of 32 in the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur. Gordon played college golf at Vanderbilt, got to play on the Palmer Cup team in 2016, and made it to the quarterfinals of the 2018 U.S. Amateur. He graduated in 2019 with a degree in Human and Organizational Development. He was a three-time All-American and was named SEC Player of the Year in 2019.
In March while in school and still an amateur, went to the PGATC Q-School in California and was tied as low medalist which worked out great for him because after graduating was able to turn professional and join the Mackenzie Tour ââ?¬â?? PGA Canada 2019 season. Played in nine events, his highest finish on that tour was a T-3rd in the Bateman Open. He was also T-4th at the Players Cup. He finished 21st on the tours Order of Merit, winning in Canadian $28,847. He also was great in writing letters to tournaments and got a sponsor exemption to play in the 2019 Utah Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour and was T-28th. He was granted a sponsor exemption and made his first start on the PGA Tour missing the cut at the Sanderson Farms. He got another sponsor exemption into the Mayakoba Golf Classic and finished T-55th and the following week was given another sponsor exemption into the RSM Classic but with rounds of 68-65-70-66 and a birdie-eagle-par-par finish ended T-10th which earned him a spot into the Sony Open in Hawaii. Gordon was able to finish T-21st at the Farmers and T-20th at Puerto Rico but then because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gordon ran out of options. With the Mackenzie Tour canceled for the year and no status on any other tour, Gordonââ?¬â?¢s tournament play was at the mercy of getting sponsor exemptions or surviving Monday qualifiers. But with the Korn Ferry Tour Finals being canceled and that circuit now carrying over membership from 2020 to 2021 and not granting PGA Tour cards for top-25 finishers like it traditionally does that was troubling. For Gordon to make it on the Korn Ferry Tour he would have had to wait until the fall of 2021 to even have a chance to qualify for that tour ââ?¬â?? meaning 18 months of Monday qualifiers and sponsor exemptions which, again, are limited.
So when he got another sponsor exemption into the Travelers Championship, he realized the importance and with rounds of 66-62-71-64 he made the best of the opportunity as he finished T-3rd just two shots back of winner Dustin Johnson. The check of $436,600 was the biggest of his career and in addition, it earned him special temporary membership so that he could play out the rest of the 2020 season which he did, his last start was a T-27th at Wyndham Championship. He played a total of 11 events on the PGA Tour making seven cuts with the two top-ten finishes. He earned 334 non-member FedExCup season points which was enough to place him in the top-125 and earn him membership for 2021.
