Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano

Fernandez-Castano was born in Madrid, Spain and he started playing golf under the tutelage of his father at age five. Although he was an accomplished tennis player, he became a golf professional in 2004 and finished 8th at that year's European Tour Qualifying School.
In his 2005 rookie season on the Tour, he won the KLM Open and the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award. In 2006, he won the BMW Asian Open, which was co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Asian Tour. His position as one of Spainâ??s leading talents was further underlined by his victory at the 2006 BMW Asian Open in a playoff, after which he promptly proposed to his girlfriend, Alicia, whom he married later in the year.
In 2007, he won his third European Tour tournament, the Italian Open and he has finished in the top-60 of the Order of Merit in each of his nine seasons. He had one tour win in 2008, coming at the Quinn Insurance British Masters.
He finished runner-up at the 2009 Estoril Open de Portugal, losing in a playoff to Michael Hoey. He posted another runner-up result the next week at the Volvo China Open over Scott Strange and he finished second for the third consecutive week at the Ballantine's Championship, where he lost to Thongchai Jaidee in a three-way playoff in extremely tough conditions in Korea. He ended the season ranked 17th in the Race to Dubai.
In 2010, had six top-10s on the European Tour and finished 35th in the Race to Dubai, but the next year was a mixed bag. After suffering a back injury, he missed the cut at the Qatar Masters in February and didn't play again until August. Picked up his first top-10 in his ninth European Tour start, at the Bankia Madrid Masters in October. Added a second top-10, also in Spain at the Castello Masters in Valencia, where he finished 2nd but a distant 11 strokes behind winner Sergio Garcia. The next month, he won the rain-shortened Barclays Singapore Open, defeating Juvic Pagunsan in a playoff. Finished the year 19th in the Race to Dubai.
Captured his sixth European Tour title at the 2012 BMW Italian Open, but the victory came a few weeks too late to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team, which was captained by his good friend and compatriot Jose Maria Olazabal. Finished the 2012 season at 20th on the European money list, earning over 1 million euros.
2013 Notes: Played in 12 PGA Tour events making 8 cuts with three top-tens. Also played in 21 European Tour events making 20 cuts and six top-ten finishes. Reached the quarterfinals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and finished T-3rd at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T-8th at the ISPS Handa Wales Open, T-9th at the Volvo World Match Play Championship, Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, and T-10th at the U.S. Open. He earned enough money halfway through the season to qualify for Special Temporary Membership on the PGA Tour, which he accepted. Parlayed that into a top-125 finish on the non-member FedExCup points list to earn his TOUR card for the 2013-2014 season. Over on the European Tour was won the BWM Masters.
He ended the season ranked 7th in the Race to Dubai, his best performance to date. Ended the year finishing T-4th at the Dunlop Phoenix and 11th at Nedbank Challenge.
2014 Notes: Played in 25 PGA Tour events making 18 cuts with one top-ten. Was 82nd in the FedExCup race. His best finish was T-4th at the RBC Canadian Open. In the FedExCup race was T-15th at the Barclays and T-45th at the Deutsche Bank. On the European Tour played in 12 European Tour events making 10 cuts.
2015 Notes: Played in 28 PGA Tour events making 13 cuts and only had one top-25 finish, T-16th at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Ended the season 165th in the FedExCup standings losing his PGA Tour card. Played in the Korn Ferry playoffs, but in his four starts his best finish was T-21st at the Small Business Connection. He had to go to Korn Ferry Tour Q-School and finished T-58th.
2016 Notes: Played in 22 Koren Ferry Tour events making 17 cuts with two top-ten finishes. Was T-9th at the Rust-Oleum Championship and Albertsons Boise Open. Was 25th in the final priority-ranking order.
2017 Notes: Played in 22 PGA Tour events making ten cuts with one top-25 finish, a T-13th at the Valero Texas Open. Finished 188th in the FedExCup standings, in the Korn Ferry Playoffs his best finish was T-31st at the Nationwide Children's. Went back to Q-school and finished T-80th.
2018 Notes: Played in 15 Korn Ferry events making 8 cuts with two top-ten finish. Best was T-4th at the Bahamas Great Abaco and T-8th at Colombia Championship. Returned to the European Tour, played in 15 events making 8 cuts with two top-ten finishes. Was 104th in the Race to Duba with earnings of euro312,711. Was T-4th at the Qatar Masters and T-5th at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters.
2019 Notes: Played exclusively on the European Tour, in 28 events made 14 cuts. Best finish was T-18th at Made in Denmark. Was 127th in Race to Dubai with earnings of euro279,808.
2020 Notes: Played in 15 European Tour events. Best finish T-14th at the Portugal Masters. Was 181st in the Race to Dubai.
2021 Notes: Best finish T-14th at the Kenya Savannah Classic.
