His grandfather played cricket for New Zealand in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. His dad, Grant, played rugby for the All Blacks and was a key player when they won the 1987 World Cup.
Since becoming professional in 2011, Ryan registered wins at the Fiji Open and Tahiti Open in 2012, defended his title in Fiji, and won the Jeep Pro-Am in 2013.
In 2014, he tasted further success, with victories at the Tahiti Open, Starwood Golf Classic, and Western Australian Open before finishing in a share of seventh in a world-class field at the Emirates Australian Open in November.
He started 2015 with another win, in the Queensland PGA Championship. In 10 Challenge Tour events, he won for the first time at the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge but was 16th in the Road to Oman, missing a spot to the European Tour by one slot. He also got to play in his first major championship, finishing T-49th at the Open Championship played at St. Andrews.
2016 Notes: The New Zealander found redemption on the 2016 Road to Oman, winning for the first time at the Tayto Northern Ireland Open after missing out by one spot in the Rankings 12 months earlier on the European Challenge Tour. A landmark 2016 season also included a visit to Rio to represent his country at the Olympics, where he finished T-39th. Had 8 top-ten finishes in 13 Challenge Tour events, which earned him fourth place in the rankings and a European Tour card for 2017. He ended his year with a T-4th in the Australian Open and 9th at the Australian PGA Championship. He relocated to Wimbledon in 2016 and is attached to Foxhills, and he is a keen fisherman away from the golf course.
2017 Notes: Playing his first full year on the European Tour, he played in 29 events making the cut in 22. He had 5 top-10s, was 6th at the French Open, and the following week had his first European Tour top-five with a T-4th at the Irish Open. Continued the good run with his third top-10 in a row with a T-4th at the Scottish Open. Fox was 34th in the Race to Dubai. On the Australian Tour, was T-6th at the HANDA New Zealand Open.
2018 Notes: Played in 26 European Tour events making 23 cuts with four top-ten finishes. He was 22nd in the Race to Dubai standings. Started his year T-4th at the Rebel Sports Masters on the Australian Tour. On the European Tour was T-3rd at the Maybank Championship and T-8th at the Italian Open. Best finish of the year was a runner-up finish at the Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open, Fox lost in a playoff to Russell Knox, who holed successive 30-foot putts - in regulation play and in the first extra hole - for an unlikely win. The 2nd place finish did get Fox into the Open Championship. Was T-6th at the Aberdeen Standard Scottish Open, then T-39th at the Open.
2019 Notes: Played in 24 European Tour events making 15 cuts with two top-ten finishes. He was 57th in the Race to Dubai standings. Was T-6th at the Saudi International. Was T-9th at the Catalunya Championship and T-8th at the Betfred British Masters. Was T-2nd at the Soudal Open, two shots back of winner Sam Horsfield.
