Began playing golf at age 12 at a nine-hole course in Yuma, Colo. In high school, he played golf, ran track, and earned all-state honors in basketball.
He won the 1996 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills C.C. with a one-shot victory over Tom Lehman and Davis Love III, one of his eight PGA Tour victories, his last at the 1998 Quad Cities Classic. His win in the 1996 U.S. Open was after reading a biography of Ben Hogan, which inspired him to practice more. He was the first sectional qualifier to win the U.S. Open since Jerry Pate in 1976. His win at Oakland Hills was his first since a three-year absence from the tour following a dirt bike accident in November 1991 that produced ligament and joint damage in his left ring finger and another accident from pulling up carpet, which injured his left index finger. He uses a reverse overlapping grip to compensate for the problem with his fingers.
In 1999, he suffered from an irregular heartbeat the first two months of the season and was then sidelined for nearly three months after the Masters with a shoulder injury. His totals on his PGA Tour are 446 starts, 279 cuts made, 44 top-10 finishes, and $6.5 million in earnings.
He made his long-awaited Champions Tour debut at the 2011 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, teaming with Doug Tewell to finish T-10th in the Raphael Division. He followed that by playing in 10 events, his best finish a T-16th at the British Senior Open. At the end of the year, he finished T-25th at Champions Tour Qualifying School, which didn't give him any status for 2012.
In 2012, he finished in the top 25 five times in 12 official starts, highlighted by a T-13 at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach when he shot 70-69 on the weekend at the Monterey Peninsula. Earned conditional status for the 2013 season by virtue of his T-11th finish at the Champions Tour's National Qualifying Tournament in mid-November.
2012 Notes: Was in the top-25 five times in 12 official starts, highlighted by a T-13th at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. He was also T-17th at the SAS Championship. He earned conditional status for the 2013 season by virtue of his T-11th finish at the Champions Tour's National Qualifying Tournament in mid-November.
2013 Notes: He played in 15 events, and his best finish was T-20th at the Insperity Championship. He finished 74th on the money list.
2014 Notes: Played in 11 events, including three as an open qualifier. His best finish was a T-40th at the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship. He opened with rounds of 68-67, closing with a 74.
2015 Notes: He played in 13 PGA Tour Champions events, his best finish was T-9th at the Senior PGA Championship. It was his only top-ten, finished 60th on the money list and 52nd on the Schwab Ranking. At the end of the year went back to Champions Tour Q-School and finished T-9th. But didn't play after that until 2018 due to struggling with elbow tendonitis and surgeries to fix the problem.
2018 Notes: Played in 7 PGA Tour Champions events with one top-ten finish. In his first event back, he finished T-6th at the Toshiba Classic, with 4 shots back of winner Vijay Singh. His next best finish was T-32nd in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. He finished 81st on the money list.
2019 Notes: Played in 15 PGA Tour Champions events with one top-25 finish. He was 66th on the Schwab rankings. His best finish was T-17th at the U.S. Senior Open Championship.
2020 & 2021 Notes: Played in 15 PGA Tour Champions events with two top-25s and finished 94th in the Charles Schwab Cup. His best finish was T-23rd at the 2020 Dominion Energy Charity and T-16th at the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship.
2022 Notes: Played in ten PGA Tour Champions events, was 103rd in the Schwab rankings, and 103th on the money list earning $41,881. Best finish T-22nd at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic.
2023 Notes: T-11th at the Invited Celebrity Classic and Regions Tradition.
