Jay Haas

His uncle, Bob Goalby, won the 1968 Masters. At age 5, Haas took his first swings with a short, broken club that Goalby had regripped. Under Goalby's watchful eye, he placed third in the first tournament he ever entered, the National Pee Wee championship. He had a successful amateur career, capped by playing on the 1975 Walker Cup USA Team and winning the 1975 NCAA Championship.
He earned his PGA Tour card in the fall of 1976 and won $32,326 his first year on Tour. In 1978, he won the Andy Williams-San Diego Open by three strokes. He would have big seasons in 1981 and '82, winning twice yearly and moving up to 15th and 13th on the money list. He was a member of the Ryder Cup Team for the first time in 1983 (he would play again in 1995 and 2004).
In 1987, he won the Houston Open. Since joining the Tour in 1977 and 2004, he has finished in the top 60 on the money list 21 times and in the top 100 every year but one (2000). In his PGA Tour career from 1977 to 2005, he played in 799 events, winning nine times, runner-up 14 times, and third 12 times. He has career earnings of $14.4 million.
Became a full-time member of the PGA Tour Champions in 2005. He owns 15 Tour victories and was the Tour's leading money winner in 2006 and 2007.
2011 Notes: He won the 3M Championship in Minnesota. This was his 15th career victory, but his first in 22 months, and ended a winless streak of 41 events.
2012 Notes: Finished among the top 30 money winners for a seventh consecutive year, and his seventh-place showing in earnings marked the fifth time in eight full-time seasons he was among the top 10. He surpassed the $1 million mark for the sixth time in eight years. He won for the 16th time in his senior career at The Principal Charity Classic in June. In June, he teamed with Morgan Pressel to win the CVS/Caremark Charity Classic by one shot over Corey Pavin and Lexi Thompson. In late August, he teamed with his son, Bill, to post an eight-shot victory at the Umpqua Bank Challenge in Portland, Ore.
2013 Notes: He was among the top 30 money winners on the Tour for a ninth consecutive year, finishing 21st, and six of his seven top-10 efforts during the season came in the first half of the season. He played his best golf during a stretch of four events when he was not outside the top seven. His best effort during that run was a T-2nd at the Senior PGA Championship at Bellerive. He shared the first-round lead and was in contention all four rounds in May in St. Louis. The week after, he finished T-7th in defense of his Principal Charity Classic title. In April, he and teammate Fred Couples finished T-4th at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf. One week later, he matched the low Sunday round at the Insperity Championship, and his 67 jumped him to a T-6th. Other than that four-event stretch, he played well starting in mid-March when he closed with rounds of 66-67 at the Toshiba Classic to finish T-3rd. He was also T-4th at the 3M Championship, thanks to a final-round 65. He served as a captain's assistant to Fred Couples on the victorious Presidents Cup USA Team at Muirfield Village.
In 2014, going into the Constellation Senior Players Championship, he played 11 events with only one finish outside of the top 10. Of his 10 top 10s, his best finish was T-2nd at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf, in which he teamed with Peter Jacobsen - they missed a playoff by one shot.
2014 Notes: He had perhaps the most remarkable season by a player over age 60, finishing 3rd in both earnings and Charles Schwab Cup points, thanks to 17 top 10s, the most he's had in a single season since 2007 (18). Was among the top 30 money-winners for the 10th consecutive year. Incredibly, only two of his 64 rounds during the season were over par, the fewest ever by a player in an entire Tour season. Ranked second only to Bernhard Langer in scoring (68.39) and birdie average (4.41) while being the leading player in the All-Around category (91). Went from the final day of the Regions Tradition (May 18) through the second round of the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship (October 31) without an over-par round. His 38 scores of par or better during this stretch set an all-time Tour mark, eclipsing Loren Roberts' 37 consecutive during the 2006-2007 seasons. During this run, he also had a season-best streak of 28 successive sub-par scores. After several brushes with a victory early in the year, he won the Greater Hickory Kia Classic at Rock Barn. It was his third victory in the event, making him just the 18th player in Tour history at age 60 or older to win a tournament. At 60 years, 10 months, and 17 days, he became the 10th-oldest winner in Tour history. Two weeks later, he nearly added a second win when he fell in a four-hole playoff to Tom Pernice Jr. at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at the Desert Mountain Club. In June, he was also a second-place finisher when he teamed with Peter Jacobsen to finish 2nd by one shot at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf. Before his Legends performance, he had been among the top five in nine of his first 10 starts in 2014, finishing third in five events.
In his 1,000th combined-career Tour start, he shot rounds of 65-66 on the weekend to move into a T-6th finish at the Constellation Senior Players Championship. During the week of the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf, he was named the 2015 Presidents Cup USA Team captain.
2015 Notes: With duties as the captain of the USA Presidents Cup team, he played in just 15 events, the fewest he has played in a season since 2005. Posted his lone top-10 finish, a T-6th at the Allianz Championship. He led the USA to victory at The Presidents Cup in South Korea in September.
2016 Notes: Started the year, finishing T-4th at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. He became the second-oldest winner in Champions Tour history in October at age 62 years, 10 months, and 7 days after beating Bart Bryant in a one-hole playoff at the Toshiba Classic. Closed his year with two strong finishes in the final two Playoff events. Was T-6th at the Dominion Charity Classic and T-4th at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. He played in 21 events, he was 17th in the money race and 12th in the Schwab Rankings.
2017 Notes: Made 21 starts with four top-10 finishes. Competed in the first two Charles Schwab Cup playoffs events but did not advance to the finals in Phoenix. He finished 41st on the final money list. He joined teammate Fred Couples for a T-5th finish at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf. Two weeks later had a 5th place finish in the Insperity Invitational. Was T-6th at the American Family Insurance Championship and 10th at the Mississippi Gulf Resort.
2018 Notes: Played in 22 PGA Tour Champions events with four top-ten finishes. 4th at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, T-10th at the American Family Insurance Championship. Was T-3rd at the Dominion Energy Charity and T-6th at the Invesco QQQ. Haas was one of four players to advance to the season finale after starting the Playoffs outside the top-36. It was his 12th trip to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and first since 2016, and he finished 31st in the season's final standings.
2019 Notes: Played in 21 PGA Tour Champions events with three top-ten finishes. He was 35th on the Schwab rankings. Was T-8th Principal Charity Classic. In his bid to become the oldest PGA Tour Champions history winner, the 65-year-old finished T-2nd at the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship, his 1,100th combined start on the PGA Tour (799) and PGA Tour Champions (301). Closed with a 3-under 67, tied for the lowest final round, and was the clubhouse leader at 4-under before Retief Goosen birdied the last two holes and won by two shots. He was T-5th at Sanford International, 3 shots back of winner Rocco Mediate.
2020 & 2021 Notes: Played in 29 PGA Tour Champions events with two top-ten finishes. He was 56th on the Schwab rankings. Was 6th at the 2020 Hoag Classic, four shots back of winner Ernie Els. Was T-3rd at the 2021 Ascension Charity Classic a shot back of the David Toms/Dicky Pride playoff. With a 67 on Sunday, it was the fifth time he shot his age or better. He ended his season with a T-16th finish at the Dominion Energy Charity.
2022 Notes: Played in 17 PGA Tour Champions events with two top-ten finishes. Finished 60th in the Schwab rankings and 60th on the money list earning $302,670. Was T-14th at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic. At age 68, he made the cut at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with his son, Bill as his partner. He became the first player age 68 or older to make the cut in a PGA Tour event. The father and son pair went on to finish T-36th. Was T-7th a the U.S. Senior Open and T-10th at the Furyk & Friends.
2023 Notes: Best finish 40th at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic.
