Paul Lawrie

His victory in the 1999 Open Championship will forever be remembered as he came from 10 strokes behind with a magnificent final round of 67 to book his place in the four-hole playoff, birdieing the final two holes to beat Frenchman Jean Van de Velde and 1997 Champion Justin Leonard. He returned to Scotland for his next victory, in 2001, at the inaugural Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, holing a 40-foot birdie putt at the last on the Old Course which won that season's European Tour Shot of the Year. Enjoyed something of a renaissance in 2011 and 2012, winning three times to claim a place in the 2012 European Ryder Cup team, and delivered a vital point in the Sunday singles against Brandt Snedeker as Europe stormed back to win. It was Lawrie's second Ryder Cup, he played in 1999.
In 2012, ended a hugely impressive season tenth in The Race to Dubai - his highest finish in ten years. Had two victories, at Qatar Masters and Johnnie Walker Championship, and ended the year 29th in the World Ranking.
Worked as an assistant under the late Doug Smart in Banchory, near Aberdeen, and the club has now named the 14th hole after him. Made a superb Ryder Cup debut at Brookline in 1999, hitting the opening tee shot and claiming three and a half points. Awarded honorary law doctorate from Robert Gordon University in his native Aberdeen and made an Honorary Life Member of the European Tour, then awarded MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Actively involved in promoting the game at grassroots through the Paul Lawrie Foundation.
2013 Notes: Played in 23 events on the European Tour making 19 cuts and had one top-ten, T-7th Volvo Golf Champions. Finished the year 63rd in the Race to Dubai earning euro513,307.
2014 Notes: Played in 16 events and made 13 cuts. Best finish was T-11th at the Qatar Masters, he finished 117th in the Race to Dubai.
2015 Notes: Played in 16 events making 12 cuts with two top-10s. Best finish T-6th at Made in Denmark and T-10th KLM Open. Finished 101st in the Race to Dubai.
2016 Notes: Played in 20 European Tour events making 12 cuts with 1, top-ten. His best finish was T-5th in the Portugal Masters. He ended the season 120th in the Race to Dubai with earnings of euros255,326. Said he was going to have season-ending surgery on his foot but he has never told anyone if that happened or not.
2017 Notes: More pains, this time it's a pain in his neck and back which has slowed him down. Only played in 13 European Tour events making 8 cuts. Best finish was T-17th at the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play. Paul finished 179th in the Race to Dubai with euro94,89.
2018 Notes: Only played in 6 European Tour events before having to stop playing in June due to back and foot problems. He hopes that the break will allow him to get the required treatment so that in January when he turns 50 he will be able to play on the Senior Tour. In the events he played in his best finish was T-61st in the only two events he made the cut in, Qatar Masters and NBO Oman Open. In September, his problems were diagnosed as being a ruptured tendon in his left foot, which is another reason for his back problems. He had foot surgery which sidelined him for the rest of 2018.
2019 Notes: Came back at the Qatar Masters and missed the cut, also missed the cut at the Oman Open. He turned 50 in January and wanted to go to PGA Tour Champions Q-School in November, but couldn't because of his surgery, so his only course is sponsor invites. He got one for the Insperity Invitational and finished T-53rd, was T-57th at the Regions Tradition and T-21st at the Senior PGA Championship. In Europe, he played in the Senior Open Hauts de France and was T-13th, 53rd at the Farmfoods European Legends, T-55th at the U.S. Senior Open. His best finish came in the 2019 Senior Open finishing T-16th.
2020 Notes: Played in seven European Tour events, made one cut T-49th at the Mauritius Open.
2021 Notes: Played in 8 events on the European Tour Legends Tour events, had six top-ten finishes and waws 9th on the order of merit with earnings of euro74,896. Best finish T-3rd at the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship and Farmfoods European Senior Masters.. Was also T-4th at the Staysure PGA Seniors.
2022 Notes: Was 2nd in the Jersey Legends and then won the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship hosted by Ian Woosnam by 3 shots over Euan McIntosh.
